A tour of shared-building courtyards focusing on planning, architecture, and landscaping. At Beit Liebling, Tel Aviv–Jaffa, no date specified.
A tour of the courtyards of apartment buildings in the city, exploring different approaches to courtyard design and the integration of nature into residential spaces, inspired by Patrick Geddes’s garden city principles. The tour will examine historical connections between architecture and gardening, and the influence of plants on space. Led by architect Dana Mor, a researcher of urban-house courtyards at the Technion. No prior knowledge is required.
The tour will focus on the courtyards of apartment buildings, which comprise a significant part of the city’s open space and serve as habitats for a variety of plants. These courtyards, established under the influence of Patrick Geddes’s garden city principles, present various aspects of the relationship between nature and the city and enable residents to influence the urban environment. During the tour, which will pass through courtyards of different types, various approaches to courtyard design and the integration of nature into residential spaces will be presented. The historical connections between architecture and gardening in courtyards will be explored, as will the different roles attributed to plants in courtyards: aesthetics, ecology, connection to nature, and more.
Architect Dana Mor researches urban-house courtyards as part of her doctoral dissertation at the Technion.
