An urban tour among block gardens and green pathways in Tel Aviv–Jaffa, led by Anat Groisman. The tour departs from Liebling House.
A particularly springlike urban tour focusing on hidden block gardens, green paths concealed between the urban blocks, and the unique vegetation growing here. Get to know Tel Aviv–Jaffa as Patrick Geddes envisioned it a century ago: a Mediterranean garden city. The tour is led by Anat Groisman, a certified tour guide.
The 1925 Geddes Plan outlined Tel Aviv’s expansion northward to the Yarkon River. An integral part of the plan was the small block gardens hidden within the urban blocks it created. During the tour, we will visit several urban block gardens—some well known and others secrets known only to local residents. We will discuss the central role Geddes intended for the block gardens, examine the process of establishing them, and learn about the changes they have undergone over the years. We will wander and discover passages and paths connecting the gardens, and become acquainted with part of the secret network of alleys, routes, and green “windows” whose foundations were laid in the Geddes Plan and which still serve as infrastructure for the city today.
The tour is based on research by architects Ruth Liberty-Shalev and Adi Har-Noy, presented in the exhibition “Urban Block Gardens” at Liebling Haus.
