A lecture on Dolly Parton’s life, songs, and work, with Nitzan Pinko. The event will take place at Zappa Tel Aviv, 144 Menachem Begin Road.
How did a girl who grew up in poverty, in a home without electricity or running water, become one of the most beloved and influential women in the world? Who was the real Jolene, and what is really hidden behind one of the most famous songs in history? And what can Dolly Parton teach us about success, generosity, freedom, and the ability to remain true to yourself?
“I’m not offended when people say blondes are stupid. I know I’m not stupid. I also know I’m not blonde!” Dolly Parton said this, knowing how to turn the persona she created for herself into an icon everyone knows and loves.
In a lecture with Nitzan Pinko, we will delve into the greatest songs, the stories behind them, and the philosophy that turned a girl who grew up in poverty in the Tennessee mountains into one of the world’s most beloved and influential figures. We will decipher the mystery behind “Jolene,” discover how she composed “Nine to Five” on her fingernails (!), and learn the tragic story of “The Bridge.”
Alongside the music, we will also discover the revolutionary Dolly—who worked for literacy and education, philanthropy, and acceptance; broke conventions; and even found herself connected to vampire slaying. Through all of this, we will try to understand Dolly’s secret of charm and the worldview that enabled her to make millions of people feel that she was saying to them: “Here I am with you.”
Nitzan Pinko is a writer, journalist, lecturer, and researcher of Israeli music. She currently writes for Ynet; in the past, she was the music correspondent for Haaretz’s Galery, Time Out Tel Aviv, and Calcalist. In her work, she focuses on anti-war issues, feminism, and activism.
