The Butterfly Book

A joint workshop for children and parents inside a giant fabric book that presents the butterfly’s life story: from the tiny egg, through the caterpillar and chrysalis stages, to spreading its colorful wings wide. With each page we turn, a new stage in the butterfly’s development appears, which we follow with our bodies—through movement, play, imagination, and puppets.

A gentle, sensory-stimulating, heartwarming experience that stays with you long after the book is closed.

First session: From Egg to Caterpillar

  • We open the book to a page showing a flower field.
  • We meet the caterpillar.
  • We find eggs and discover caterpillars inside them, crawl them over our bodies and around the room, and return them to the eggs.
  • We turn the page and crawl over leaves and inside a large “caterpillar” tube.
  • We pick the large leaves and use them for a movement activity.
  • We cover ourselves with leaves and go to sleep, then close the book.

Second session

We open a page showing a large caterpillar and wrap it in ribbons to create a chrysalis. We put on stretchy fabric bags and turn into chrysalises through movement activities. We meet the caterpillar as it turns into a chrysalis and place our caterpillars inside chrysalises. We wish everyone good night.

Third session: From Chrysalis to Butterfly

We open the first page, where the flowers are filled with pom-poms. The children discover that the caterpillar puppet inside the chrysalis has turned into a butterfly, and so have their caterpillars. We feed the caterpillar and put the butterflies on our fingers, flying with them and collecting nectar from the flowers.

We open the last page, featuring colorful shapes, and design our own butterflies by gluing shapes together. We put them on our bodies and fly around the room with the butterfly puppet. We lie down between the pages of the book and go to sleep, close the book, summarize what we experienced in the workshop, and say goodbye.
