An introductory workshop on the world of birds on October 14, 23 and 29 at the “Rosh Tzipor” Birdwatching Park in Ganei Yehoshua. For ages 8 and up.
We will get to know the world of birds through introductory activities, observations, and learning about behavioral characteristics. We will learn to use binoculars and develop field observation and identification skills, get an up-close look at the banding process and researchers’ fieldwork, tour different habitats, and learn to locate birds by their surroundings and calls. For ages 8 and up.
We will dive into the world of birds and learn about their unique structure. We will understand how their body structure enables flight, examine different types of beaks, and discover how they are adapted to different kinds of food. We will learn how birds adapt their body structure to the environment in which they live. We will also learn the evolutionary story behind wings, the connection between birds and dinosaurs, and the migratory journeys they make between seasons. We will learn how to adjust and use professional binoculars and go on our first field observation. Through the lens, we will begin identifying different behaviors: searching for food on the ground, movement and camouflage in dense vegetation, and species that can be encountered around the Yarkon River and park.
We will learn about bird banding and see how researchers track birds in the field. We will understand why a ring is attached to a bird’s leg, what information can be learned from it, and how the data collected supports research and nature conservation. We will continue practicing in the field and improve our observation and binocular-use skills while observing birds in motion.
On the final day, we will tour Rosh Tzipor and become familiar with its variety of habitats and the birds characteristic of each one. We will learn to adapt our search methods to the environment in which a bird lives: we will search for waterfowl in the wet habitat, locate birds hiding in dense vegetation, observe the treetops, and follow activity along the river. We will also learn to listen to nature. By identifying chirps, calls, and songs, we will be able to locate birds that are difficult to see and identify species by their sounds as well.
*It is possible to register for one or more of the three days.
