School of Sustainability: Community Olive Harvest

As part of the Autumn Urban Nature Month events: a community olive harvest and seed-bomb making. The workshop is part of the first-anniversary celebrations of the young educational food forest of the School of Sustainability at the Farm, in partnership with Ganei Yehoshua. Ages 3 and up.

So why harvest olives in the city?

First of all, because it’s fun! Secondly, because there is an abundance around us in the city that would be a shame not to enjoy. We are used to thinking of picking citrus fruit in orchards in a moshav, or harvesting olives in the Galilee, but the truth is that tens of thousands of fruit trees are planted throughout the city as well—whether in groves and parks, small orchards, food forests, private yards, or community gardens where residents grow fruit trees and vegetables for food. Most of this fruit is not used and simply falls and rots. Instead, we can enjoy this resource that is all around us.

What will we do?

We will get to know the olive trees growing at the Farm and learn about their health benefits. We will harvest using special rakes, spread sheets to collect the fruit that falls to the ground, and fill the jars we bring from home. We will learn about the olive-pickling process, which we will continue at home, and then make wildflower seed bombs to scatter in the building courtyard and neighborhood.

What to bring?

• Small/medium-sized jars with a silicone sealing strip, such as honey or date syrup jars
• A hat
• A water bottle

The workshop is part of the first-anniversary celebrations of the young educational food forest of the School of Sustainability at the Farm, in partnership with Ganei Yehoshua, and part of the Autumn Urban Nature Month events, dedicated to olive harvests throughout the city.
