Films at the Comedy Festival: Sallah Shabati

A new immigrant from Morocco, thrown like many of his contemporaries into a transit camp, uses all his cunning to outwit the bureaucrats and cynics who see him as a wild, uncultured immigrant in need of education—and gets into even more trouble when he has to digest his daughter’s love story with a young kibbutznik. Ephraim Kishon (The Policeman Azulai) creates Israel’s first social satire and one of its first box-office hits: a biting comedy that also received harsh criticism and, in many ways, launched the Israeli genre known as bourekas films.
