What made Bracha Zefira, Shoshana Damari, and Esther Gamlielit the three figures who shaped the place of Yemenite music in Israeli culture?
In a special program of conversation and music, we will delve into the stories of the three great divas who brought the musical tradition of Yemenite Jewry to the heart of Hebrew song and influenced generations of creators and performers. Through stories, research, archival excerpts, and live performances, we will discover how they shaped the Israeli sound and the place of Yemenite heritage in local culture.
Featuring Dr. Dani Bar-Maoz, a researcher of Yemenite Jewry and the history of the Yishuv; Dr. Efrat Bart, a researcher of Hebrew song and Israeli music; and Amir Maimon, author of the new biography of Esther Gamlielit. Between the conversation segments, singer-songwriter Osheret Haim, accompanied by guitarist Nimrod Ben-Natan, will perform some of the finest songs by the three singers, in arrangements combining Yemenite tradition with contemporary sounds.
The event is held as part of the Teima Festival—a five-day celebration of cultural events, music, tours, and gatherings exploring the renewal of Yemenite Jewish heritage.
