Sounds from Iran in the Heart of Jerusalem

An evening of ancient Persian music and an extraordinary cultural encounter is coming to the public sphere.

At the heart of the event, which will take place in the plaza of the Jaffa Street Gallery at 97 Jaffa Street, the Golha Ensemble will perform live, conducted by santur player Menashe Sasson and featuring singer Farnaz Cohen. The ensemble performs a wealth of works from the repertoire of Iranian Jewry, using authentic instruments.

The performance will include classic Iranian songs alongside modern songs familiar to every Iranian immigrant household, such as “Esfahan” by the musician Moein, as well as Jewish sacred songs such as “Shalom Aleichem.”

The performance marks the festive closing event of Isha-Nameh, an exhibition by artist David Motadeh currently on display at the gallery.

This artistic-documentary project gives a platform to the migration stories of women from Iran through photographs of personal objects that survived migration, drawing inspiration from the famous Persian epic.

The connection between the ensemble’s rich repertoire and the women’s stories in the exhibition is especially relevant at this time. The public attention directed toward Iran becomes a direct and unmediated encounter with the voices, sounds, and fascinating heritage of those who came from Iran and made their home here in Israel.

The event is part of the Culture Series, supported by the Mandel Foundation and managed by the Jerusalem Foundation.
