Guided tour of the architectural history of the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum. On October 1–24 at the City Museum, 27 Bialik Street, Tel Aviv.
Join us for a tour of the building erected in 1925 as a luxury hotel, designed by architect Moshe Cherner. It later became the city hall, and about two years ago began its new life as the Tel Aviv–Jaffa City Museum.
During the tour, we will discover how the location atop a hill, in the heart of the city’s cultural and business center, influenced the building; become acquainted with its unique Neoclassical style; and view Bialik Square from the mayor’s circular balcony. There, we can also find examples of the Land of Israel’s eclectic style from the 1920s, as well as the International Style—Bauhaus—that characterizes Tel Aviv in the 1930s.
We will discuss the renovation and preservation of the building, begun in 2009 to mark Tel Aviv’s 100th anniversary, and share a behind-the-scenes look at the establishment of the new museum—a home for all the city’s residents. Together, we will explore the renewed renovation of the mayor’s office, which is being completed these very days and offers a glimpse into the past, including through a rare copy of The Book of Tel Aviv, edited by Alter Druyanov, which describes the founding days of Little Tel Aviv.
A guided tour of the museum, focusing on the building’s architectural history, the stories behind the scenes, and the community vision of the Tel Aviv–Jaffa City Museum as expressed through its collection of stories.
