The Tel Aviv Biennale of Arts and Design first opened in 2020 at MoMA, the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv. Since then, it has offered a contemporary perspective on Israel’s craft and design scene, drawing on the museum’s longstanding commitment to local material culture.
Since the previous Biennale, Israeli society has experienced one of the most dramatic upheavals in its history. The current Biennale responds to this reality through works examining the place of creation in times of crisis and expressing feelings of urgency, resilience, and impermanence. The fields of craft and design, in their various aspects, emerge not only as artistic expression, but also as a life force that is creative and generative, communal and social. Here, creation takes shape as an act of responsibility toward people, the community, and the environment—as a realm of material, technological, scholarly, and practical knowledge that continues to change, develop, and be reformulated.
The Biennale’s theme for 2026 draws inspiration from Hesiod’s epic poem Works and Days from the eighth century BCE—one of the earliest reflections on “work,” understood not merely as toil or craftsmanship, but as both an existential and moral act. The poem, written as practical guidance for a worthy and just life, takes on renewed meaning today, as the act of creation is revealed as a conscious, ongoing practice of resilience, and sometimes also of resistance, arising from the desire to warn, protect, and heal.
