Midweek Daytime at the Chaim Nachman Bialik House Museum with Zeev Volkov

You asked to hold this tour during the week and in the daytime so that those who cannot come on Saturday would be able to attend.

If enough people sign up, I would like to conduct a tour of the Chaim Nahman Bialik House Museum, which was rightly called “the new temple in the first Hebrew city”—a temple built for the nation’s first secular spiritual leader.

I used to work there, but then the museum closed for restoration, and for two years there was “silence about the poet.” Yet Bialik is more relevant today than ever. So welcome to the Chaim Nahman Bialik House Museum.

This museum will allow us to look at the renaissance of the Jewish nation, Tel Aviv at the beginning of its journey, and one of the brightest figures in the life of the Jewish people.

We will see that Bialik was not only a poet—not even primarily a poet—but the voice of his era, a man who was called “the king of the Jewish nation.” Chaim Nahman Bialik was the voice of the nation. He wrote in Hebrew, a language that few people understood. He moved to Tel Aviv, to a street named after him. He created Jewish secular culture. Mayakovsky quoted him, and the finest poets of the Russian Silver Age translated his works. Every child in Israel knows him.

A creator who lived the brightest part of his life in Odessa, wrote the overwhelming majority of his poetry there, and turned the city into a center of Jewish culture at the beginning of the twentieth century. What do we know about him? What do we know about the Jewish national poet?

I would like to call this tour: “Who Are You, Chaim Nahman Bialik?”
