Marking the 455th anniversary of the birth of the most controversial artist of the Baroque era.
On the cusp of the 16th and 17th centuries, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio caused a sensation in the art world and forever changed European painting. His short life was as thrilling and provocative as his unconventional canvases, painted with bold realism and intense emotion.
Europe was obsessed with the artist, but then the fashion for him faded, and he was forgotten for 300 years. The second "discovery" of Caravaggio occurred only in the mid-20th century.
In contemporary culture, Caravaggio is experiencing a true renaissance: the image of the fiery, rebellious genius has become a source of inspiration for mass culture. Directors, writers, and bloggers reinterpret his fate in various ways; his name resonates at international exhibitions, and his style has become the hallmark of trendy photo shoots and modern cinema.

Elena Galinskaya is a historian, art critic, traveler, and storyteller, author of books and numerous publications in scientific and popular media. By profession, she is a museum worker: Museum of Israel (Department of Ethnography and Judaica), Eretz Israel Museum (Ethnography Department), ANU Museum. For the past 25 years, she has combined museum work with guiding tours in Europe and numerous travels around the world, gathering a vivid palette of impressions along the way and acquiring valuable experience in studying history and works of art through direct application. She gladly shares her discoveries, insights, and hypotheses with her readers and listeners.
