A night in Jaffa begins suddenly, like a chord that did not wait to be resolved. The soloist strikes the strings, the air trembles, and everything — everything that came before — loses its meaning. The music disintegrates into notes, the people — into shadows, the stage — into flashes of light and pauses.
Jazz manouche flows, stumbles, catches the rhythm, loses it, throws it back into the darkness. A voice from the distant streets of New Orleans does not so much sing as play, gets tangled in syncopations and smiles. Guitars crash into the hum of the cooling city, but do not drown, but rock the night to the edge of possibility. Somewhere there, at the corner of this moment, the double bass freezes — holding the balance so that the world does not collapse.
