This year, the Tel Aviv Museum may have wanted to exhibit great artists from around the world, but something happened. So it had to look into its own storage rooms and return to what had not been shown for so long—to works from the museum’s original collection. 🖼️
That is how this brilliant, tragic, and anti-war exhibition, titled “Year Zero,” came about. At first glance, it features numerous famous names and several well-known paintings framed by art from the first third of the 20th century. But at the heart of the exhibition lies the feat of one now-forgotten man.
His name does not appear in Tel Aviv’s toponymy—there is no street, square, or alley named after him, neither in the municipal directory nor on maps. So it is worth discussing the achievement of Dr. Karl Schwarz, the man who preserved Jewish art and created the Tel Aviv Museum’s collection. And, at the same time, seeing what the museum looked like during its early years. 🏛️
