A lecture on the great Torah scholars who emerged in Jerusalem’s Old Yishuv. The meeting will take place at Yad Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, 14 Ibn Gabirol Street, Jerusalem; doors open at 16:30.
From the late 19th century onward, criticism of the Old Yishuv intensified. Its critics described it as “idle,” corrupt, and lacking cultural creativity—even in the realm of Torah. One of the sharpest claims was that despite Jerusalem’s many Torah institutions, the city had not produced any truly great Torah scholars. Was that really the case?
In this lecture, we will examine this claim through several great and highly influential rabbinic figures who emerged in Jerusalem during the Old Yishuv, and consider the differences between Ottoman Jerusalem and Mandatory Jerusalem.
Meeting point: Yad Yitzhak Ben-Zvi – 14 Even Gabirol Street
Doors open: 16:30
