Culinary tour in Mea Shearim and the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods of Jerusalem, held on Thursdays, 17:30–20:00. We will visit bakeries and cholent restaurants and taste local foods.
It all began with a street rumor that something unusual happens in the Mea Shearim neighborhood on Thursday nights. Even Jerusalemites who were born and raised here are unaware of this fascinating world—and especially of what takes place in Mea Shearim on Thursdays, as Shabbat approaches.
They say that at this time the neighborhood becomes bustling and crowded, filled with women and yeshiva students busy preparing for Shabbat. In hidden stairwells, cholent eateries open for one night only, where people sit on crates and sample the best cholent in the country. Those who know where to go will also find amazing bakeries, kugel unlike anything they have ever tasted, and herring in a variety of forms and flavors.
During the tour, we will glimpse the vibrant life of the Hasidic courtyards, schools, shtiebels, and local market; listen to the sounds of Hasidic melodies; and taste local delicacies (at an additional cost).
This is a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of this fascinating world, uncover local secrets, and have an engaging conversation with the neighbor we have never spoken to before.
Time will be provided during the tour for independent tastings. You will be able to choose from a variety of foods from Jewish cuisine: challah, cholent, kugel, herring, and more. You are invited to decide what you feel like tasting and purchasing.
The tour takes place on Thursdays, between 17:30 and 20:00.
The meeting point and guide’s details will be sent to registrants on the day of the tour.
Very important! Come dressed modestly!
Women: a long skirt or dress and a shirt with sleeves.
All tastings are kosher; vegetarian-friendly options are available.
Tastings are independent—each person tastes and pays accordingly, directly at the delicatessens and bakeries.
