Waiting for him

A contemporary Jewish paraphrase of Waiting for Godot. A poetic, clownish-visual, comedic and moving monodrama, almost wordless. An original production featuring original music, sound effects and audience participation.

Meme, a warm and lively Moroccan grandmother, is waiting for her beloved grandson, who was raised by her and is currently serving in the reserves. As she prepares for his return, she is swept into a confused and emotional sequence of cooking, cleaning, laundry and preparations. During the wait, she reveals memories, longing, missed opportunities, guilt, great love and soul-searching to the audience.

When everything is ready, the message arrives: he isn’t coming today. Maybe tomorrow.

In a period of “between wars,” uncertainty and the ongoing anticipation of loved ones’ return and of things to come, Waiting for Him becomes a human-Israeli parable about the waiting and expectations in our lives: for connection, healing, a hug, comfort and good news.

Through humor, compassion and gentle clowning, the play explores the need for connection and community, human resilience, differences in coping with uncertainty, and intergenerational relationships. It invites the audience on an emotional journey of identification, self-acceptance and hope.
