Program
Alessandro Scarlatti — the oratorio Sin, Repentance and Grace (La colpa, il pentimento e la grazia)
The sixth concert, concluding the season of the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, will once again bring the musicians together with their longtime friend, German conductor Michael Schneider. Under his direction, Alessandro Scarlatti’s rarely performed oratorio, composed in 1708 to a libretto by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, will be performed in Israel for the first time.
Rather than directly recounting the events of the Gospel, the work unfolds the inner drama of three allegorical figures — Sin, Repentance, and Grace. Their dispute leads from a dark sense of guilt and an awareness of human weakness to hope and the redemptive meaning of the Cross.
Michael Schneider is well acquainted with this score and has already recorded it. In his interpretation, Scarlatti’s music emerges as a subtle psychological theater, where spiritual reflection, expressive arias, and the rich colors of the Baroque come together in a unified dramatic arc.
