In Mea Shearim, a group of women decided to revolt against the leadership of the community to save one of their own from a miserable and violent marriage. They use the only ancient and effective weapon at their disposal: abstaining from their husbands. They refuse to visit the mikveh and initiate a process of abstaining from marital life until their friend is freed from the chains of marriage. "The Rebels" is a touching and funny drama by Amnon Levi, portraying a women's struggle for equality in the most unexpected place. The women of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood decide that the value of mutual help for a woman in distress outweighs even the mitzvah of being fruitful and multiplying. They bravely confront the men, suffer from ostracism and persecution, yet continue their struggle despite the significant cost. Levi, who wrote "Sheindele" — one of the great successes of Israeli theater — returns to the ultra-Orthodox woman in Mea Shearim and documents her struggle for independence. Levi draws inspiration for the play from a similar abstention from marital life that recently occurred in Satmar, New York, demanding the release of an agunah. That initiative succeeded and amazed the ultra-Orthodox world.
