“Why Is There No Paradise on Earth?” is a play based on the Israeli writer Ephraim Sevela’s novella of the same name.
It is a story about childhood on the eve of the war during the first half of the 20th century.
The protagonists are children from the Jewish town of Bobruisk.
Tender and humorous stories from the characters’ childhood are acted out by one actress and 25 puppets. They are accompanied by the voice of the narrator, performed by actor Veniamin Smekhov.
The performance also includes footage from historical newsreels.
“Why Is There No Paradise on Earth?” is a production about the Second World War and the fate of the Jewish people—subjects that resonate especially strongly in 2025.
