The New Heroes of New Painting
Painting and Photography from Africa and the African Diaspora
Art with Ruti Direktor
Some compare the creative outburst of art from Africa and the African diaspora to the flourishing of Italian Renaissance art. The return of figurative, narrative, and historical painting against the backdrop of the identity discourse of recent decades, together with the emergence of a new photography, gives prominence to figures who until recently had not been seen at center stage.
Ruti Direktor is a curator, writer, and lecturer. She formerly served as curator of contemporary art at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and chief curator at the Haifa Museum of Art. She lectures and writes about contemporary Israeli and international art. Her publications include the book Contemporary Art: I’m Talking to You and her first work of fiction, The Road to Venice.
