What is love of nature, really? Does love create connection and commitment? Does it also lead to a desire to preserve and protect?
Continuing the tradition of the “Nature and Human” conferences, the third Ramat Hanadiv Conference will focus this year on three central concepts at the heart of the discussion about our relationship with nature: love of nature, connection to nature, and nature conservation.
At the conference, we will delve into the relationship between people and nature from the perspectives of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and try to understand the connections between emotion, connection, responsibility, and action in a period of far-reaching environmental and social change.
The conference will conclude with the session “Hatzava Revisited: From Love of the Land to an Ethics of Place,” which returns to a landmark conference held in Hatzava in 1980. At that conference, Amos Oz, S. Yizhar, Amos Kenan, and Haim Gouri met with members of the Society for the Protection of Nature for a discussion about love of the land, nature, culture, and belonging.
Almost five decades later, we will ask: What has changed in our love of the land, and what language of love, belonging, and responsibility toward place is needed today?
The conference is part of the activities of a multidisciplinary research institute for human–nature relations being established at Ramat Hanadiv in cooperation with the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute.
The first Ramat Hanadiv Conference, held in 2024, focused on the connection between people and nature as a means of promoting mental well-being and personal and community resilience, combining theory, research, and practical experience.
The second conference, held in 2025, continued the academic discussion of human–nature relations and focused on the connection between nature, health, and the resilience of people and society.
