Wars, diseases, and tragedies influence politics, technological progress, and the economy. But do they influence music? In this lecture, we will explore how the tragedy of 9/11 and Napoleon influenced chords and rhythms, how World War II influenced background music, how Messiaen wrote music in a concentration camp, and what Chopin and anime have to do with it. No prior knowledge of music is required.
