A two-day trip in the Lower Galilee and around the Sea of Galilee, including historical sites, viewpoints, and accommodation at ANA Poria. Intended for senior citizens.
Gadi’s Hikers’ Club is setting out on a two-day trip exploring settlement in the Lower Galilee, the historic colonies, figures who shaped the history of the Land of Israel, and the historic sites of the Sea of Galilee.
The trip will be guided by Ahav and accompanied by Asheret.
During the trip, we will visit Kadoorie and Kfar Tavor, learn about the unique story of the Subbotniks, take in views of the Sea of Galilee from Switzerland Forest, and tour Tiberias’s important sites. We will also visit the historic railway station at Tzemah and the Yigal Allon Center in Ginosar.
Accommodation will be at the Poriya Hostel, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.
Departure by bus, with passenger pickup at designated stops along Highway 2 northbound. Independent morning break along the way.
We will begin with a visit to Kadoorie Youth Village, one of the most important agricultural schools in the history of the Land of Israel. We will hear about its establishment in 1933, agricultural education, and some of its prominent graduates, including Yitzhak Rabin, Yigal Allon, and Haim Guri.
We will visit the historic courtyard and learn about the fascinating story of the Shmueli–Protopopov family. Through their story, we will discover the world of the Subbotniks, who came from Russia, converted to Judaism, and became integrated into Jewish settlement in the Galilee.
We will tour the historic colony of Kfar Tavor, founded in 1901 and originally called Mas’ha. We will walk among the founders’ homes, hear about the farmers’ lives and the difficulties they faced, and learn about the establishment of the Hashomer organization.
Toward the end of the day, we will travel along the scenic route through Switzerland Forest. We will stop at one of the viewpoints overlooking Tiberias, the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights, and the Galilee Mountains.
In the afternoon, we will arrive at the Poriya Hostel, receive our rooms, and enjoy some rest and dinner.
After breakfast, we will check out and set out for the second day of the trip.
We will begin at Tzemah’s restored railway station. We will hear about the Jezreel Valley Railway and its branch to Damascus, the station’s importance to the region’s development, and the battles that took place at Tzemah.
We will visit the ancient synagogue, whose impressive mosaic floor includes a zodiac and a figure of the sun god. We will learn about the hot therapeutic springs and hear about Hamat’s importance as a Jewish center during the Mishnaic and Talmudic periods.
We will explore the history of Tiberias—from the city founded by Herod Antipas, through its transformation into an important Jewish center, to the renewal of Jewish settlement during the time of Doña Gracia.
During the tour, we will visit several sites in the ancient city, including the remains of the wall, the fortress, the mosque, the promenade, and the Etz Haim Synagogue.
We will conclude the trip at the Yigal Allon Center, located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in Kibbutz Ginosar. We will learn about the life and legacy of Yigal Allon—Palmach member, commander, statesman, and man of the Galilee.
At the museum, we will also visit the exhibition of the ancient boat discovered in the waters of the Sea of Galilee and dated to the Second Temple period.
A festive lunch will be served, followed by the return journey and passenger drop-off at stops along the way.
