Three-day introductory birdwatching course: October 14, 23, and 29 at the Rosh Tzipor Birdwatching Center in Tel Aviv. Includes observations, bird ringing, and tours.

Descriptiontranslated from Hebrew (original)

Join us for an introductory birdwatching course, where we will get to know the world of birds through their anatomy, behavior, and evolution.

We will learn to use binoculars and develop field observation and identification skills. We will become familiar with the bird-banding process and the work of researchers in the field. We will tour different habitats and learn to locate birds according to their surroundings and calls.

14.10 | Day One: Getting to Know the World of Birds

We will dive into the world of birds and learn about their unique anatomy. We will understand how their body structure enables flight, examine different types of beaks, and discover how they are adapted to different kinds of food. We will learn how birds adapt their body structure to the environment in which they live.

We will also learn the evolutionary story behind wings, the connection between birds and dinosaurs, and the migration journeys they make between seasons.

We will learn how to adjust and use professional binoculars and go on our first field observation. Through the lens, we will begin identifying different behaviors: searching for food on the ground, moving through and camouflaging themselves in dense vegetation, and species that can be encountered around the Yarkon River and the park.

23.10 | Day Two: The Fundamentals of Bird Banding

We will learn about bird banding and see how researchers track birds in the field. We will understand why a ring is attached to a bird’s leg, what information can be learned from it, and how the data collected contributes to research and nature conservation.

We will continue practicing in the field and hone our observation and binocular-use skills while watching birds in motion.

29.10 | Day Three: A Journey Through Habitats

On the final day, we will tour Rosh Tzipor and become familiar with its variety of habitats and the birds characteristic of each one.

We will learn to adapt our search methods to the environment in which a bird lives: we will search for waterfowl in the wetland habitat, locate birds hiding in dense vegetation, observe the treetops, and follow activity along the river.

We will learn to listen to nature: we will learn to locate birds that are difficult to see and identify them by their chirps, calls, and songs.

Suitable for ages 8–12.
