A flamenco performance by the Israeli Flamenco troupe at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv. The work connects Canaanite mythology with the flamenco tradition.
The performance brings to the stage the Canaanite spirit blowing through the stories of the local goddesses, who constituted a significant part of the pantheon of gods, and from which the Hebrew Bible drew no small amount of inspiration. The performance connects the ancient history of the Land of Israel with flamenco culture, which many of its practitioners view as a religion in every respect.
Before it became a modern artistic genre, flamenco, which originated in Spanish-Romani folklore, was an element of ritual ceremonies that included gatherings in small, crowded spaces; singing and playing music; prayer; and dance. Over the years, flamenco developed into a language understood and known only by those who practice it, like a kind of secret religion. Each flamenco rhythm has its own name, role, and characteristics, giving it the status of a living, independent, passionate entity and connecting it to a particular aspect of human life. Similarly, the gods and goddesses of Canaanite mythology personify various aspects of human culture and nature, making them metaphorical entities with eternal significance.
The contemporary hymns written by Assi Meshulam and composed by Talia Yona Kleiger are joined by Michal Natan’s choreography, which connects the various flamenco rhythms to the archetypal meanings of the songs, transforming the project into a meaningful allegorical work for our time.
