Violence without a drop of blood, but no less cruel: a new lecture series at the Cinematheque, featuring a screening of The Age of Innocence, directed by Martin Scorsese, an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel about a society in which every glance, invitation, silence, or courtesy is a weapon. The screening will be preceded by a lecture by Shimon Adaf.
Featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Miriam Margolyes
On the eve of his marriage to a respectable young woman, Archer, a young and privileged New York attorney, falls in love with his fiancée’s married cousin. He faces a difficult choice: whether to follow his heart and feelings or surrender to the pressures of puritanical society... Despite his distinctive directorial style, influenced in no small part by the cinema of Luchino Visconti, Scorsese delivers an intense film with a sensitive and eloquent screenplay, meticulous production design, and superb performances.
