A series of lectures and film screenings at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, featuring films about Hong Kong and India and lectures by Limor Tzadok and Ayelet Idelberg.
Cinematic Lectures at the Cinematheque: Behind Hong Kong’s economic prosperity lie lives that are not glamorous at all. Against this backdrop of illusion, the story of Angie and Pat is revealed in the film All Shall Be Well, accompanied by a lecture by Limor Tzadok. The second screening, 12th Fail, set against the backdrop of modern-day India and the dream of success, will be accompanied by a lecture by Ayelet Idelberg.
Skyscrapers, a stock exchange that sets the pace for the world, and the illusion of endless abundance. Big money and a global dream—but behind the glamour lie difficult lives, extreme overcrowding, and deep social disparities. In this filmed lecture, we will delve into Hong Kong as it truly is and discuss the gap between dazzling wealth and everyday reality; love, relationships, and status in a world where money dictates connections; the status of women between career, social pressure, and survival; and the new life in Hong Kong since the return to China—identity, freedom, and quiet fear. A personal perspective through streets, people, and small stories about a city that sells a dream and charges a price for it.
Limor Tzadok is a Lacanian psychoanalyst, photographer, travel writer for Masa Aher Online, an adventurous traveler, and an experienced, certified tour guide worldwide. She presents a regular segment on Channel 13’s television program Potchim Yom. Author of the book Life Stories – A Window into Vanishing Cultures.
Angie and Pat have shared a life together for several decades. When Pat falls asleep one night and does not wake up, Angie’s life collapses. She receives support from her close circle of friends, as well as from Pat’s family—at least at first. Problems begin when the family does not respect the way the deceased asked to be buried, and continue when they set their sights on the couple’s apartment, which was owned by Pat. Because they are a same-sex couple, Angie has no legal status allowing her to remain in the apartment. She is therefore forced to leave and begin a new life. The fourth feature film by Ray Yeung premiered in the Panorama section at the most recent Berlin International Film Festival and won the Teddy Award. The award-winning Hong Kong director has created a superbly written and directed drama, centered on a particularly moving performance by Patra Au Ga Man.
The entire event lasts approximately two and a half hours.
In this lecture, we will travel behind the scenes of contemporary India and become acquainted with the social, economic, and cultural reality shaping the film’s plot. We will examine how the new Indian cinema not only tells moving stories, but also serves as a critical mirror to the education system, social classes, and the dream of success held by millions of young people in India.
Through the true and inspiring story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, we will discover how determination, perseverance, and faith in one’s path can overcome even seemingly impossible obstacles. The lecture will provide a broad and meaningful context, offering the keys to understanding the social and cultural background that makes the film such a powerful and thought-provoking experience.
The best Indian film of the year in a preview screening! There are moments in life when it seems that everything has already been decided in advance: where you are born, how much money there is at home, who believes in you, and who does not. But some films remind us what we are capable of when we truly want something, and 12th Fail is one such film.
Based on the fascinating and moving true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film follows a young man from a poor, remote village in central India who fails his high-school graduation exams. From this low point, without money or connections, he refuses to give up. He sets out to fight for his future, aiming to join the civil service, and confronts one of the toughest and most brutal selection systems in the world.
This is authentic and intelligent cinema: a powerful, honest, and unfiltered drama. Two and a half hours of a moving journey that will give your thinking a “restart” and prove that even against all odds, it is possible to chart a new path in life. This is a cinematic work celebrating the power of human will in the face of impossible circumstances. An emotional and inspiring experience not to be missed!
The event lasts approximately 190 minutes.
