The Unimaginable Cinema Project at Beit Ariela

Almost from the moment it was born, cinema has been a battlefield of conflicting and confrontational visions, with each one convinced that its vision would bring the world the desired revolution. We will embark on a journey through the intricacies of some of the most important film manifestos ever written, read them, and wonder whether it is even possible to translate an unequivocal verbal manifesto into a sequence of moving images.

14.10 | Between the Inconceivable and the Possible
What is a manifesto and what is its role, and manifestos in the history of Israeli cinema. Guest: Nana Ariel

21.10 | A Stone in One Hand and a Camera in the Other
Film manifestos of dictatorships and totalitarian regimes, and the resistance to them.

28.10 | Cinema Is Dead, Long Live Cinema
Film manifestos from the past three decades, from Dogme 95, through the call to return to “amateur” cinema, to the question of whether pornography is in fact what will redeem cinema.

A stone in one hand, a camera in the other. Enlightenment or revolution. Sexual liberation or spiritual purity. Almost from the moment it was born, cinema has been a battlefield of conflicting and confrontational visions, with each one convinced that its vision would bring the world the desired revolution. In this series of meetings, we will embark on a journey through the intricacies of some of the most important film manifestos ever written, read them, watch excerpts from films that tried to put them into practice, and wonder whether it is even possible to translate an unequivocal verbal manifesto into a sequence of moving images.
