A solo performance about the life and work of S. Y. Agnon, performed by Ruti Tamir. At the Cameri Theatre, 19 Shaul HaMelech Boulevard, Tel Aviv.
A creation by Ruti Tamir: Love, Pain, Humor and Wit—The Writings of S.Y. Agnon, an Ageless and Timeless Writer, in a Celebration of Literature, Language and Theater
From his study, the life of writer Agnon unfolds, and his characters are brought to life before the audience’s eyes. Through a slow, enchanting physical transformation, the actress is reborn each time as a different character. One after another, they emerge—men, women, and even one dog named Balak. Love, pain, humor and wit—the writings of Agnon, an ageless and timeless writer, in a celebration of literature, language and theater.
Adaptation, direction and performance: Ruti Tamir
Music: Ariel Barnes, Yoni Tal
Set design: Yuval Kedem, Ruti Tamir
Costumes and props: Ruti Tamir
“I left the performance spellbound by Ruti Tamir—a multitalented artist, extraordinarily gifted, who succeeded in bringing the writer S.Y. Agnon back to life. Run, and do not miss this unique performance.”
—Adi Sternberg, Amanga’s Word
“Ruti Tamir managed to captivate me and left me speechless for an hour and a half, unable to breathe or move, as she brought Agnon’s characters to life one after another in small fragments from his great works. Tamir is a virtuoso—and the characters she created captivated me with every nuance of her facial expressions, with every word and syllable that emerged from each character’s mouth. In between, in an equally fascinating interlude, she reviewed the life story of the man who created his characters, often in his own image—that of Agnon. In short, Book, Woman, House—run to see it.”
—Oron Schwartz, Moksini
“Tamir is such a talented actress, mime artist and creator that I recommend this performance even to those who are not fans of solo plays. It is impossible not to watch her; the way she moves from one character to another before our eyes is mesmerizing. One moment she is the narrator, and the next she is one of Agnon’s characters—with such remarkable completeness that it creates the feeling that there is not just one actress in this performance, but ten different characters and one narrator.”
—Hadar Shabbat, In the Direction of the Wind
“A very successful, varied and intelligent adaptation… There is a desire to see more and more. The choice to incorporate as many excerpts as possible creates tension and curiosity, and allows the viewer to identify with one character or another rather than cling to a single character, as happens in many plays. And still—the acting and effects are the secret of the entire success. The adaptations and music, with a minimum of props, allow the focus to remain on the actress and the words. Well done!”
—Dr. Ruchama Elbag, senior lecturer on Agnon
