A mysterious herd of rhinoceroses attacks a peaceful town. At first, the startled residents try to ignore the threat, but their fear for their fate intensifies and leads them to willingly turn into rhinoceroses. The play’s protagonist, a young man named Bérenger, does everything he can to keep his close friends and beloved from joining the herd of rhinoceroses—but is it possible to remain human in a time of extreme danger? And at what cost?
Ionesco’s celebrated allegory takes on a relevant and breathtaking significance in light of today’s reality. This interpretation by Yair Sherman—the resident director of Baruch Ivcher Beit Lessin Theatre, who directed the acclaimed productions Hamlet, Hedda Gabler, and Antigone—joins the ranks of the great directors for whom this play has represented an artistic challenge.
