Minimalism as Method: Steve Reich and Sol LeWitt

The first event will explore the beginnings of minimalism in art and music in the United States, through a reading of two seminal texts from the period—“Music as a Gradual Process” (1968) by Steve Reich and “Sentences on Conceptual Art” (1969) by Sol LeWitt.

The discussion will take place at the Kiryat HaMelacha Culture Cell, after which we will move to the nearby Anat Studio to hear two works:

• Steve Reich, New York Counterpoint, for flute and electronics
  Hagar Shahal — flute

• Boaz Ben-Moshe, Tomorrow I Am Tomorrow, for voice and ensemble
  Keren Motzeri — soprano
  Maayan Franco — conductor

About the Series

A series of three lectures on minimalist music and art, alongside live performances of music and readings from the writings of visual artists and composers. Each lecture will focus on one point in time—from process-based writing using early minimalist techniques; through repetitiveness as the basis for creating new oral musical traditions; to repetition as a liturgical foundation and even as Jewish ritual. Three composers will be at the center of the series: Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, and David Lang. Their music will be performed live at each lecture by members of the Meitar Ensemble. In parallel, we will examine related approaches in visual art through the works of Sol LeWitt, Ann Hamilton, and On Kawara.
