A five-session ink painting and Japanese calligraphy workshop will take place on Sundays, October 4–November 1, at the Magid Center. Intended for ages 18 and up.
The Magic of Brush and Ink – A fascinating series of meetings dedicated to traditional Japanese painting and calligraphy.
You are invited to immerse yourselves in the fundamentals of traditional Japanese ink painting.
From the moment the sumi—the Japanese ink—is prepared inside the inkstone (suzuri), in a slow, meditative motion, a ritual begins that connects heart and soul, body and breath, thought and line.
We will encounter the “Four Treasures”: the brush, the ink, the inkstone, and the paper—the tools of the monk, calligrapher, and poet.
We will learn about the connection between the movement of the brush and consciousness, and understand, at the tip of the brush, how characters and brushstrokes become an aesthetic creation—an artistic expression that combines minimalism with a connection to the world in which we live: nature, the seasons, and the plant and animal worlds.
We will experiment with the three Japanese writing systems, practice the first stroke—ichi—and draw the Zen circle (enso), which enables us to empty the mind and let the hand move on its own, as a direct continuation of the heart, toward the entire world and the cosmos.
The series is intended for anyone who wishes to engage practically with Japanese aesthetics through the direct experience of ink, paper, and breath.
