“Year Zero” — A Unique Exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum with Zeev Wolf

This year, the Tel Aviv Museum may have wanted to exhibit great artists from around the world, but something happened. So it had to look into its own storage facilities and return to something that had not been shown for a very long time: works from the museum’s original collection.

Thus emerged this brilliant, tragic, and anti-war exhibition, titled “Year Zero.” At first glance, it features many famous names and several renowned paintings framed by the art of the first third of the 20th century. But at the heart of the exhibition lies the heroic deed of one now-forgotten man.

His name does not appear in Tel Aviv’s list of place names—there is no street, square, or alley named after him—not in the municipal directory and not on the maps. It is therefore worth discussing the heroic deed of Dr. Karl Schwarz, the man who preserved Jewish art and created the Tel Aviv Museum’s collection. At the same time, we will see what the museum looked like during its early years.
