“Jerusalem’s Monastic Dungeons” (UNDERGROUND JERUSALEM!)

We deliberately waited for summer to offer you this unusual tour. While the sun heats the stones beyond the Old City walls, we will descend to places where coolness, twilight, and a sense of contact with deep antiquity reign all year round.

Beneath modern Jerusalem lies another city—a city of dungeons, cisterns, forgotten streets, and ancient churches. We will visit places rarely seen by ordinary tourists and experience Jerusalem not from above, but from within.

1. We will begin at the Convent of the Sisters of Zion. Beneath its walls, one of the Old City’s most impressive underground complexes has been preserved. Here we will see the Struthion Pool, which once supplied the city with water, and the ancient Roman pavement of the Lithostrotos—the very stone slabs on which traces of Roman legionnaires’ games can still be discerned.

2. We will visit the underground chambers of the Greek Monastery of the Praetorium on the Via Dolorosa. According to tradition, this was where the Roman dungeon stood in which Jesus awaited trial. The stone vaults, silence, and coolness create a special atmosphere in this place.

3. We will continue to the Coptic Monastery of Saint Anthony. Down an old staircase, we will descend to the mysterious Cistern of Saint Helena—one of the hidden corners of Christian Jerusalem, which many people pass right beside without even suspecting it exists.

4. And, of course, we will visit the underground levels of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Beneath the chapels and side chapels lie ancient water reservoirs. According to church tradition, Queen Helena discovered the True Cross in one of these underground spaces.

This tour is for those who love opening hidden doors and seeing what usually remains concealed from view.
