The Big Blue: Ruti Segal

Ruthy Segal says: “Since childhood, the sea has been a source of attraction, recreation, and pleasure for me. I have always loved spending time on its shores and in its waters, observing them—especially during storms, when the waves break powerfully against the shore.”

Ruthy Segal’s mini-retrospective offers a broad overview of her work over the years, allowing visitors to trace her rich and sensitive artistic world. Nature, in its changing manifestations, lies at the heart of her work, serving as an enduring source of inspiration, personal memory, and emotional space.

The color blue, so strongly associated with the sea and sky, appears throughout many of the works and serves as a connecting thread between the various series. On large-scale canvases, using broad, rhythmic, and highly gestural brushstrokes, Segal creates pictorial spaces that move between direct observation of the landscape and its deconstruction and reassembly through free painterly means. One can almost hear the rustling of leaves in the treetops, feel the movement of the wind, and sense the reverberation of waves crashing against the shore.

Segal’s artistic language moves along the axis between realism and abstraction. She begins with visible reality but does not seek merely to document it. In the spirit of early modernist painting, particularly the works of Kandinsky early in his career, she uses landscape and nature as a point of departure for an emotional and inner journey. Forms disintegrate and merge anew, moving between the familiar and the suggestive, between depiction and sensation.

Her works feature images of trees, flowers, skies, and sea, but they are not presented solely as direct representations.
