Between Sky and Water: Simon Komly

The series of paintings Between Sky and Water, presented by Simone Comelli, was created using a mixed-media technique combining watercolors, acrylics, wax, and additional materials on heavy paper in varying formats. The works move between transparent, delicate layers of color and stains, lines, and free painterly gestures, and resonate in spirit with the tradition of lyrical and emotional abstraction.

Comelli, Italian by origin and a neurosurgeon by profession, finds an affinity between his medical work and the creative process. His daily encounter with human complexity, unexpected situations, and the need to respond to changing circumstances finds visual expression in paintings based on chance, intuition, and immediate response. Color is applied to the paper without prior planning in a process of deliberate spontaneity: one stain leads to another, one layer covers or reveals the one preceding it, and the material itself becomes a partner in the process. Thus, a pictorial space emerges that does not seek to depict an external reality, but rather to give form to inner movement, memory, sensation, and the subconscious.

The paintings invite viewers to linger before what cannot be defined in words or a clear image. Transparency, layers of color, and free gestures allow each observer to find their own associations and emotions in the work, transforming the act of looking into part of the intimate experience the painting offers.
