The national awakening in Europe in the 19th century led many composers to turn to the folk music of their countries and incorporate local melodies, rhythms, and stories into artistic works.

In this meeting, we will focus on the music of the British Isles and explore how composers such as Elgar, Britten, and Vaughan Williams shaped a local musical identity. We will also encounter Beethoven, who arranged dozens of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh songs, and learn about important Irish ensembles, characteristic instruments, and the encounter between folk tradition, the concert hall, and popular culture.

20:00–21:15 | Concert

The centerpiece of the concert will be Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, “The Scottish”—a work born from his visit to Scotland that expresses his impressions of its landscapes, history, and atmosphere.

Also featured will be Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on Greensleeves, a selection of songs and melodies from the Celtic tradition in sweeping orchestral arrangements, and the premiere of Beethoven’s Irish songs in a new symphonic orchestration by Yaron Gottfried.
