Music and dance have been interconnected for centuries. From the court dances of the Baroque period, through Europe’s national and folk dances, to Argentina’s fiery rhythms, composers have transformed bodily movement into works full of color, rhythm, and life.
Accompanied by musical demonstrations, we will embark on a journey across countries and eras and discover how melodies, rhythms, and local traditions moved from the village, the street, and the dance hall to the concert stage.
We will encounter the refined and stylized world of French dance, Hungarian energy and Central European traditions, and the rhythm and power of Latin America. Through works by Rameau, Respighi, Brahms, Kodály, Ginastera, and others, we will discover how music manages to make us feel the dance—even while we are sitting in the hall.
