Love, jealousy, seduction, passion, revenge and humor—for opera, everything is larger than life.

In this lecture, we will journey behind the scenes of some of the most unforgettable moments in the operatic repertoire and get to know the characters, stories and emotions hidden behind the great arias and duets. We will discover how Mozart, Rossini, Bizet, Offenbach, Purcell and Bellini use voice and orchestra to portray characters, create tension and move the audience. We will learn to listen to opera through its drama, color and character—even without knowing the plot in advance.

Immediately after the lecture, all of this will come to life onstage in a captivating concert for two singers and orchestra.

20:00–21:15 | Captivating Opera Concert

A captivating evening concert for two singers and orchestra, bringing to the stage a dazzling gallery of opera heroines and characters:

• Susanna and Cherubino, full of love and intrigue, from The Marriage of Figaro
• The witty and virtuosic Rosina from The Barber of Seville
• Olympia, the mechanical doll from The Tales of Hoffmann
• Queen Dido in her moving lament

Alongside beloved arias and duets, the overtures to The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni will be performed, as well as thrilling music from Carmen.

The evening will conclude with Bellini’s moving and turbulent duet between Norma and Adalgisa—a moment of reconciliation, female solidarity and vocal power.

A journey through love and seduction, virtuosic humor, pain, tragedy and freedom—through the great voices of the operatic world and the orchestra’s rich colors.
