In the Mea Shearim neighborhood, a group of women decides to rebel against the community leadership in order to save one of them from an unhappy and abusive marriage. They use the only ancient and effective weapon at their disposal: avoiding their husbands. They refuse to go to the mikveh and begin abstaining from marital relations until their friend is freed from the bonds of marriage.
Rebels is a touching and humorous drama by Amnon Levy that portrays women’s struggle for equality in the most unexpected place. The women of the Haredi neighborhood decide that the value of mutual aid for a woman in need outweighs even the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply.” They bravely stand up to the men, endure boycotts and persecution, and nevertheless continue their struggle despite the high cost.
Levy drew inspiration for the play from a similar movement to abstain from marital relations that recently took place in Satmar, New York, demanding the release of an agunah. The movement succeeded and stunned the Haredi world.
