The String Quartet No. 15 in A minor is undoubtedly one of the peaks of Beethoven’s oeuvre, and one of the highest peaks of the art of music in general. Its five movements form a tense journey, entirely devoted to the search for expressive nuances that conceal themselves, delving ever deeper into the human spirit and its expansion throughout the universe. The quartet’s slow movement is, in Beethoven’s words: “A Sacred Song of Thanksgiving by a Convalescent to the Deity.” It is utterly fascinating and moving to listen to Beethoven’s spirit, embodied in the sounds of the quartet as it portrays the sacred.
