Arranging symphonies for chamber ensembles was customary in the 19th century and was often done by the symphonies’ composers themselves. Such is the case with Beethoven’s Second Symphony, which he arranged for a trio. The chamber-music perspective on the symphony is particularly exciting; it seems, as it were, to be viewed through its skeleton, while the ear perceives through it the energies spreading toward the imaginary dimensions it suggests.
