At the age of 28, Elie Wiesel wrote a letter revealing his ambition to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for Night, the book he wrote after being liberated from the extermination camps. Decades later, he did indeed win the Nobel Prize—but for Peace. He lived his entire life within that gap. Wiesel turned himself into an icon and the conscience of the free world, yet the tuxedo he wore on stages around the world concealed the prisoner’s pajamas he refused to part with. The film’s director, whose father was on the same train to Auschwitz as Wiesel, embarks on a personal journey of investigation, rooted in the belief that important people deserve more than admiration—they deserve the truth.
