Descriptiontranslated from Hebrew (original)

In the exhibition “Inner Skin” by Gil Yefman, presented in the spaces of Mamuta in the basement of Hansen House, works created using a variety of materials and media will be shown, inspired by the story of Hansen House—Jerusalem’s “Leper House.” They combine soft sculpture in knitting and felting, sound, video, and installation, and address the space between isolation from the outside world and a place of refuge and inner calm; and the body, familiar and strange at once, serving as both a playground and an arena of struggle.

Skin lesions, its puncturing, and its changing forms become landscapes of the body and a metaphor for society as a whole in the works. The attraction and repulsion that have accompanied the hospital since its establishment in the 19th century—the desire to peek beyond its walls, mingled with fear of what was happening inside—are also present in the exhibition space.

Visitors entering the exhibition activate, through their bodily presence, the various channels of the soundtrack accompanying the works, becoming another body in the exhibition space and making it unique with every visit. The exhibition moves along the tension between attraction and repulsion, between curiosity and apprehension, and seeks to observe all our illnesses and afflictions with a compassionate and accepting gaze.
