J. S. Bach—Magnificat

Two Generations, Two Magnificats

A concert bringing together two generations of the Bach family—Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach—through one of the grandest forms of liturgical music: the Magnificat.

At the center of the evening is J. S. Bach’s monumental Magnificat, a radiant and inspirational work combining choir, soloists, and orchestra in a wealth of polyphony, drama, and energy.

Alongside it, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Magnificat (Wq 215) will be performed—a work standing at the crossroads between the late Baroque and the emerging Classical style, bringing with it a bolder, more emotional, and more theatrical musical language.

The encounter between father and son reveals not only a family connection, but also a fascinating stylistic transition between two musical eras—from the polyphonic complexity and architectural balance of the Baroque to a more personal, free, and expressive world.
