Ada and her daughter arrive from Scotland in the remote New Zealand of the 19th century. Ada has been mute since the age of six and communicates through playing her beloved piano. After her husband leaves the piano on the beach, it is bought by their neighbor. Ada agrees to give him piano lessons in exchange for getting the piano back, unaware that he has other intentions.
