The Venice Biennale | Guest Lecture with Dr. Smadar Shapira

In Minor Keys is a fascinating biennale, filled with outstanding works, ideologically oriented toward postcolonial discourse and explicitly presenting works primarily from the Global South. It continues conceptually in the tradition of earlier biennales, while also raising new questions and introducing new ideas.

The lecture will examine both parts of the exhibition and consider its qualities—from its connections to literature to its emphasis on the sensory and the sensual. We will also discuss the distinctive features of this exhibition, in which the curator—who has since passed away—became a revered key figure.

We will discuss the prominent national pavilions, both those at the biennale’s main sites, such as the Nordic and Indian pavilions and the Austrian pavilion, which received considerable publicity, and those located throughout Venice. We will examine how perceptions of which pavilions are central have changed, and consider the overall picture emerging from the vast exhibition.
