Pompeii – Last Day: Special Lecture and Tour at the Museum of Biblical Lands

How did life in Pompeii look moments before Mount Vesuvius buried the entire city in ash? In this lecture, accompanied by a presentation, we will embark on a virtual tour through the streets of the Roman city of Pompeii, destroyed in 79 CE by the eruption of Vesuvius. We'll visit temples and squares, enter the luxurious houses of the city’s wealthy… and discover:
- Where did the residents spend their time?
- What happened in the bathhouses?
- Even, what did the municipal tavern look like?
Through artifacts and stories we will try to know Pompeii not merely as an archaeological site, but as a lively, vibrant city that will be revived before our eyes.
In the second part we will tour the museum following the trail of Pompeii and the Roman world. The highlight will be a visit to the Parsca‑Room, which displays original wall paintings uncovered on the outskirts of Pompeii after they were buried under volcanic ash and transferred to the museum. The frescoes, which once decorated luxurious villas, allow us to peek into the homes, feel the residents’ tastes, enter their world, and learn the stories that once adorned their walls.
The Parsca‑Room is usually closed to the public and will be opened especially for participants of this activity. This is a rare opportunity to experience Pompeii through the very spaces where its inhabitants lived and through their wall paintings that have survived for almost two millennia — all in Jerusalem!
